A new animal-handling Web site is now available, compliments of the American Meat Institute. It is designed to serve as a resource for the meat industry, consumers and media about the treatment of livestock in meat processing plants.

The site, www.animalhandling.org, includes sections on animal welfare and handling, government regulations, voluntary guidelines, auditing, training and animal welfare assistance.

Also available are the 2005 AMI Foundation’s Recommended Animal Handling Guidelines and Audit Guide. These documents are written by animal-welfare expert Temple Grandin of Colorado State University. The guide can be downloaded for free from AMI’s Web site. It also includes AMI Foundation audit forms for packer/processors handling pigs, cattle and sheep.
