In times of change, such as in the current agricultural industry, there is a greater need for management to develop new approaches to the tasks at hand. Pork producers who develop greater coordinating capacity will have a competitive advantage. Team management will be an important component of that solution, says Allen Prosch, University of Nebraska Pork Central coordinator.


Producers with limited human resources will need to create ways to reduce the limits imposed by an individual decision-maker. Processes that consolidate information and assist analysis can help decision-makers. To those who can create such processes there is opportunity, says Prosch. He points to contract production as an example of such a process and opportunity.


Other alternatives also are possible. Producers may work together to accomplish tasks similar to having a larger management team. Pork pro-ducers could form a working group that allows each owner/operator the latitude to completely manage one stage of the production and marketing system.
