In our second article honoring the five winners of the Honoring Caregivers award, we look at winner Marian Lehman:

To know Marian is to understand that she absolutely, positively respects the pigs in her care. Of the five recipients to receive the Honoring Caregivers award, she and her husband were the last to arrive – she wanted to spend as little time away from her farm as possible.

A contract grower of finishing pigs for Country View Family Farms in Bloomsburg, Penn., Marian was both surprised and humbled to find out she had been chosen for the award.

She notes, “We’re a small farm compared to some others, but we work hard to keep our pigs healthy and comfortable.”

Marian is responsible for the daily care and well-being of more than 2,400 finishing pigs and puts animal welfare as her top priority. As Jessica Risser says of Marian, “She genuinely cares about the health and well-being of the pigs in her barn and does her best every day to ensure their productivity. She takes pride in seeing her efforts rewarded with healthy pigs.”

Though she has been working in the pork industry for just three years, Risser describes Marian has having “quickly established herself as one of the top contract growers in the Country View Family Farms system.”

Risser adds, “The pig industry would be well served if every contract grower provided the same level of care for their pigs that Marian does.”
