Farm Journal Media's Stephanie Gable visits with Lisa Becton, DVM of National Pork Board at the 2016 World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa.

They discuss how the countdown is underway to the Jan. 1, 2017, implementation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new regulations for antibiotic use on the farm. Under the new rules, medically important antibiotics can only be used for therapeutic use– to treat, control or prevent specific disease under veterinary guidance. Feed-grade antibiotics will require a veterinary feed directive and water-based antibiotics will require a prescription.
