DES MOINES – From rubbing elbows with presidential hopefuls to seeing the latest products and services the industry has to offer, there were plenty of things to see, people to meet and pork to eat at the 2016 Iowa Pork Congress..

Here are just a few of the highlights from the event, held Jan. 27-28 in Des Moines:

  • Presidential hopefuls drop by: In a last-ditch effort to grab votes before next week’s Iowa caucus, Republican presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Carly Fiorina each spoke at the event. Both brought messages of change, tackling the EPA's Waters of the U.S. rule, PEDv and taxes.
  • Seminars keep everyone busy: In addition to PQA Plus and TQA certification classes, many great seminars wrapped up the first of the event. One of the most popular discussions was on pit foam and producer safety, which included a first-hand account of surviving a flash fire.  More seminars and training sessions are scheduled for Thursday.
  • Hundreds of booths to see: Hundreds of booth filled the trade show floor, and though thousands of pork producers filtered through the area on Wednesday, the trade show will continue through the afternoon on Thursday.
