The American Royal Association awarded scholarships of $2,500 each to five college students this year. Winners of the scholarships are: Breanne Brammer, a junior at the University of Missouri; Lana Swendson, a post-graduate student at Kansas State University; Logan Britton, a senior at Kansas State University; Nathan Laudan, a junior at Kansas State University; and Nathan Stinson, a junior at Kansas State University.

The American Royal began last week and continues through this week in Kansas City, Mo. The Royal Scholars program is designed to provide an opportunity for outstanding college students to advocate for the food and fiber industry and the American Royal. Selected applicants will travel to Kansas City, Missouri for training and participation in the 114th American Royal. Royal Scholars receive media training, attend civic meetings, assist with school tours, and many other American Royal activities. Scholars are selected on their academic achievements as well as community leadership, on and off campus. In recognition of the outstanding achievements of these young leaders, the American Royal Association will award a $2,500 scholarship to each student selected as a 2013 Royal Scholar.

“The five individuals selected demonstrate exemplary grades, while maintaining active leadership roles in student clubs and organizations. These students also represent the best leaders in their respective schools and communities, and will undoubtedly continue to be leaders and advocates for agriculture,” said Cynthia Pistilli Savage, 2013 Chairman of the American Royal.

The American Royal Association is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that has been a Kansas City tradition since 1899. Each year more than 270,000 people attend events at the American Royal Complex. In 2012, the Royal was able to give $1.4 million in scholarship and educational awards. In addition to its educational mission, the American Royal generates some $60 million of economic impact, $4.4 million in local tax revenues, and supports 450 jobs.
