Alliance report highlights advancements in livestock production

A report released Monday by the Animal Agriculture Alliance shows technology and animal handling practices are not only feeding a growing world population, they’re ensuring responsible care for livestock.

The report features information from livestock, poultry and egg producers addressing prominent consumer concerns. The report shares ways America’s farmers and ranchers are caring for their animals, protecting the environment, using antibiotics responsibly and producing the world’s safest food.

Producers recognize the critical role animal well-being plays in providing the best quality food products, and animal care is the highest priority both for large and small farms.

According to the report, “Advances in Animal Agriculture; What the Center for a Livable Future, Pew Commission and Others Aren’t Telling You About Food Production,”  animal mistreatment not only affects the animal, it’s also damaging to a livestock producer’s business. It costs more to grow stressed animals to market weight and lowers the quality of the meat.

AAA released the report in response to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for a Livable Future report on ‘industrial’ farming which is expected to be released Oct. 22.

“Many organizations--including the Pew Commission--have long criticized the animal agriculture community for not caring enough about their animals or environment or prioritizing public health,” said Alliance President and CEO Kay Johnson Smith. “While there’s always more progress to be made, the entire animal agriculture community has worked hard and has achieved results. Those results should be shared.”

The report discusses advances in technology and handling to consume fewer resources while yielding the same product. Other advancements include the reduction in the illness rate from E. coli to less than one case in 100,000 people and a growing emphasis on sustainable practices.

AAA recognizes the importance of connecting with consumers increasingly disconnected from livestock production.

“Food safety in this country is the best it has ever been, and part of that is because of modern animal husbandry practices and food safety technologies,” Dr. Richard Raymond said in a letter introducing the report.

Raymond acknowledges there’s a place for niche products in the consumer market, but those products won’t feed the world’s growing population.
