The decline in October shipment pig pig population Japan Association Forecasts (2014/8/2) the maximum PED measures continue
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) is making its way through Japanese pig herds, just as it has in the United States. The largest pork-producing prefectures are dealing with the disease, and as a result, market hog numbers are expected to be lower this fall.
On the basis of a questionnaire sent to Japanese pig producers from the Japan Pig Association, the shipment forecast for October is expected to be almost 12 percent lower than last year. Slaughter numbers will be approximately 4 percent lower than last year for the third and fourth quarters of 2014.
While this is not good news for the Japanese pork industry, it does mean that the country will likely need higher imports of pork to compensate for short domestic supplies.
The Japan Pig Association says, "currently, PEDv infections have settled down,” but when the weather turns cold, producers should prepare to deal with the disease again.
