Blog: Why I don’t like Carrie Underwood

Resize text          Printer-friendly version of this article Printer-friendly version of this article

Katie OlthoffKatie Olthoff The internet is abuzz over Carrie Underwood’s performance on The Sound of Music Live recently. And word on the street is that she wasn’t very good.

Call me a trendsetter, if you will, but I’ve disliked Ms. Underwood for quite some time. And it has nothing to do with the fact that she’s no Julie Andrews.

Many people do not know that Carrie Underwood is a financial supporter of the Humane Society of the United States.  That sounds like a good thing, right?

But the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not what you think.  HSUS is a political organization which spends 0.8% of its budget on animal shelters.  Their advertising dollars would make you think otherwise, but their tax returns tell the truth.

HSUS Carrie Underwood What does HSUS do with the rest of their $100 million annual budget?

Well, 41% is spend on fundraising.  That’s right.  41% of their budget is for fundraising, and less than 1% is for animal shelters.

Why do they do so much fundraising, then?  So they can lobby against animal agriculture and family farms like mine.

I can get over the fact that Carrie’s no Julie Andrews.  It doesn’t bother me that my husband thinks she’s hot.  I don’t even care that she’s vegan – that’s her choice.  But donating money to such a manipulative, greedy, appalling organization?  That’s something I won’t stand for.

I like my fellow farmers.  I like local animal shelters.  I like that we have food choice, including the choice to eat vegan.  But I do not CAN NOT like Carrie Underwood.

Well this is an interesting comment and I see your point and agree. But in all fairness to Carrie she probably does not know this piece of information. She loves animals period and besides that her family still farms. I hope she sees this article and can stand up for herself. Believe me it's not Carrie's thing.

CT, Miss Underwood knows exactly what HSUS does with her money. Her publiciity machine is well informed about the comments of various agriculture bloggers. She donates to HSUS because it makes here feel good. The new of the donations is leaked and managed. Her camp walks a fine line to make her popular with the mostly young female crowd that makes up the majority of her fan base. At the same time, they want to keep the controversy at a low enough level that the other part of her fan base doesnt' recoil at her support of the radical animal right agenda. The fact that her family continues to farm is not particularly relevant. She has traveled a long way in both distance and ideology from Oklahoma, a journey that started even before she left home.

I have always lived on a farm. My brother is a cattle and grain farmer. However, that doesn't make me blind to what goes on in the hog and turkey confinement houses in our area. Driving by a veal farm turns my stomach. Seeing starving cattle in the winter turns my stomach. Yes, you have a right to hate Carrie Underwood. I don't disagree that much of the money for ALL charitable organizations is wasted. The country found that out with the Susan Koman organization. However, Carrie Underwood is known for giving to shelters in her home town. So all is not lost. Carrie Underwood aside, farming needs to clean up their own act. Confinement houses for any animal is one of the cruelest practices of man. Of course, the bottom line is money so they will continue to flourish. I admire Underwood for taking a stand--very few entertainers do as they fear it will hurt them financially.

What a totally distorted joke of an article. Carrie Underwood has given millions of dollars to all types of charities. During her last tour, $1.00 of every ticket sold went to thr Red Cross for over $1 million dollars. After Sandy she donated the profits of a concert back to the community in Atlanta City. She an animal lover and open up an animal shelter in her home town. So go ahead and join the haters club, I much prefer to be entertained by by a caring compassionate entertainer who has given back all she has.

That's right, Erin, your brother's cattle and crop farming operation is fine, it's those OTHER farmers that are doing it wrong.

Iowa  |  December, 16, 2013 at 09:09 AM

Excuse me,Erin. We operate a hog confinement on our home place. Our business has been in the pork raising business for many years. DO NOT lump all hog & confinement owners & operators together. We do a good job of caring for these animals while they are in our buildings as most farmers do. The HSUS is a fraud who's main goal is not to help animals but to stop livestock production any way they can. Just watch their ads pop out during election times especially when they are touting a certain candidate or are against one. Carrie is free to be a vegan. She is free to donate where she sees fit. We do not buy her music because she is against our livelihood. That is our right.

Erin, are you serious right now? I was taught when i was very young to never assume, because there is a chance your assumption is WRONG. And if its WRONG, then your perception is distortede and can lead to irrational ideals that you are coincidentally forcing on others that just read your ignorance. How do you know those cattle in winter are starving? Are you an animal scientist? Have you ever stopped and talked to the owner to see what they are feeding? What do you think those cattle would survive on if there was nobody around to feed them? And to your point about hog confinement houses: yes, there are horrible farmers out there that have done cruel things to animals. that does not mean every confinement is cruel. There are people that kill other people everyday. DOES THAT MEAN WE ARE ALL MURDERERS? Heavens no. Before making irrational comments ever again, please educate yourself so you do not sound like an idiot.

Sadly, Eric, you reflect the uninformed consumer (and voter) so prevalent in today's society. I too grew up on a farm in IL and raised animals outside, but as a professor, I found that raising animals in a controlled environment is better for the animal and the environment. I learned a bit about the veal industry about 30 years ago and since then have been in veal barns across the country. I must say unequivocally that veal are the most cared for animals that we raise for meat (and probably better than many companion animals). they are individually fed and cared for by dedicated producers who have a great deal of knowledge. As they were forced to move from individual pens to group pens (due to social pressure from uniformed consumers such as you) they are sicker, grow slower and require more feed. This is because the behavior of calves involves such things as navel sucking and licking, which spreads disease and causes more antibiotic treatment. Before the veal industry started, most of the Holstein bull calves were knocked in the head by the dairy farmer…. I believe this is a better alternative. Giving a lot of money to a charity without understanding what they do with it is not charity, it is trying to compensate for the guilt of having too much money. HSUS is vile and a threat to all animal agriculture. They are not concerned about animals.

Sorry DocBeef but you must listen to too much Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. I have a doctorate degree and am not uniformed. All you people are good at is name calling be it Uniformed or Low Information Voters. Our society definetely deserve much better. As I was rewatched ithe Sound of Music saturday it made wonder why everything has come to name calling hatred.

Mark
IL  |  December, 16, 2013 at 10:35 AM

Erin, I have a hog confinement operation, I also raise hogs outdoors. I sell both. Right now the snow is 10 inches deep. The bedding in their pens are 20 inches deep. They consume 20% less feed than the confinement barn. It takes them 30 days longer to get to market weight. It takes 3/4 of a pound more feed to produce a pound of pork. That's a 186 more pounds of feed per animal. or $20 more cost plus more time. The part I need to express is the death loss. Raised outdoor - 7.8% Confinement - 2.4% Now talking vet, meds & vaccines add another $7.40 for the outdoor raised pigs. I can not even talk about labor. 20 times more labor involved with outdoor raised hogs. You give the perception confinement hogs are full of antibiotics when in fact it's the opposite. I am to the point nobody will give the extra $100 per hog needed to breakeven . You enjoy your house at 70 degrees. The hogs enjoy the house at 70 degrees also. CARING FOR ANIMALS IS GIVING THEM THE BEST LIVING CONDITIONS. SOMETIMES THAT IS IN A CONFINEMENT BUILDING. OR IT'S CALLED MODERN FARMING ! Sorry I will not raise the outdoors again. The last ones were sold last week. Tired of losing money for a few crazy minded people.

I am shocked by this article Carrie Underwood has a CAT foundation that helps support the animal shelter in her home town in OK and her mother even volunteers there. Carrie is a good person and your attacking her is so unfounded. Do you know she also donates to the school's music program in her home town in OK so children have the instruments they need. Do you know she and her husband actively support anit bulling in schools. Do you know that she support the protection of animals and what is wrong with that. Your facts are so far off base I think you did check them and look in the mirror before attacking some one on line like you have You do not have to like her but attacking some one so hatefully is in my book a bully.

I totally agree with you Dee. You go to her blog and she claims to be a Sunday School Christian. Then she comes heres and claims to be trendsetter and all she does is spew hate. Next time in Sunday School maybe she should take Carrie's advice and go to 1 Peter 2:1-25. CT I am sure we won't see Carrie here. She is way to classy to respond to this garbage.

There are a lot of celebrities who have said they have given money to this organization.

Eric, I don't have a doctorate. I do have a BS Ed. plus 15 hours. During my course of eduction, I learned that some of the most misinformed and low information people in this World are people with doctorates. Many of them tend to know things that aren't so, particularly when discussing topics outside of their discipline. The fact that you rant about Rush Limbaugh and Fox News without any knowledge of DocBeef's listening habits is a dead giveaway that the agend is more important to you than are the facts. That is a clear indication of spending too much time on a university campus and not enough time observing in the real World and learning by doing.

Cynthia, I care what Katie Olthoff likes. Apparently you do too or you wouldn't have posted your semi-rabid defense of Carrie Underwood. As far as all of the good stuff Ms. Underwood does, she could do more. She has more than enough money to keep her going. And doing good things doesn't excuse doing questionable things, like donating to a radical organization that subversively seeks to seperate animals and man. "I don’t want to see another cat or dog born.” – CEO Wayne Pacelle in Bloodties, 1994 “We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding …One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.” – CEO Wayne Pacelle, as reported in Animal People News, May1993

you are entitled to your wrong opinion. Carrie knows where her money is going, she has her own charity the CATS foundation for shelters and schools in her home town. I would also like to see you perfrom in front of millions of people and sell out concerts and go up against Simon Cowell and win american idol and hit the notes that she does. Call me when you do. Carrie tried something different and I guess since you could not do what she did then thats why you do not like her. Your loss, Carrie did a great job.

Second last paragraph: "That's her choice." That not only applies to her choice of being vegan, but also her choice in which foundations she chooses to support. As previously mentioned, she also has her own animal shelter in her home state, she gives back to schools, and Red Cross. And to the comments already posted, if you're going to attack a celebrity based on the lack of money they give towards foundations, etc. Maybe we should start with a celebrity who does nothing but buy mansions and flashy cars, etc. Also maybe a celebrity that makes 5x more than Carrie does.

Congratulations. Congratulations on using Carrie Underwood's name and recent Sound of Music attention to draw attention to your disdain for for the Humane Society. It's unfortunate that you cannot see the good intentions Carrie has when choosing to give her money to charity. The Humane Society does help animal shelters and other things Carrie holds close to her heart. Because of that, she chose to donate her money to the organization. Yet you choose to believe the worst and associate her with their efforts that negatively affect farmers. I choose to judge people based on intent... and I find it hard to believe she gave a cent to anything intended to be used for anti-farming. Come on now. I understand you wanting to raise attention to the use of funds that might hurt farmers. But what I cannot understand is why you choose to form opinions about a good-hearted person AND use your blog to spread such a negative view on her. Spread the word about the Human Society all you want, but can't you do so without tarnishing someone else's good deeds? Then I'll really send you a genuine congratulations. I hope your children have broader minds than you; let's hope you raise them to think rationally.

SHE HAS THE RIGHT TO DONATE TO WHATEVER ORGANIZATION SHE FEELS STRONGLY ABOUT, WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE JUDGING, LET ME ASK HOW MANY OF YOU DONATE MONEY TO ANY CHARITIES YOU CARE ABOUT?!?!! EXACTLY THERES NOT A HAND FULL OF YOU OUT THERE. SHE HAS DONATED TO MANY CHARITIES THAT SPEAK TO HER HEART, SHE LOVES ANIMALS AND LOVES HER HOMETOWN SHE HAS DONATED LEFT AND RIGHT. TO THE WRITER OF THIS ARTICLE, THE FACT THAT YOU MENTION HER PERFORMANCE ON "THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC", AND MENTION HOW ATTRACTIVE SHE IS, WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THIS TOPIC THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO PROOVE? EXACTLY IT DOESNT THAT IS NOT RELEVANT, AND IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU ARE JUST "TRYING" TO PUT HER DOWN BY ATTACKING HER IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM, HOW PROFESSIONAL OF YOU. SOME PEOPLE WILL HATE HER SOME PEOPLE WILL LOVE HER I DONT EXPECT EVERYONE TO LOVE HER, I UNDERSTAND WE ALL HAVE OUR OPINOINS, WHAT BOTHERS ME IS THAT IF YOUR TRYING TO MAKE A POINT ABOUT SOMEONE DONT ATTACK THEM ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, AND USE THAT AS A WAY TO ATTACK HER THAT IS SUCH A LOW AND IMMATURE THING TO DO. INSECURITIES REALLY DOESNT LOOK PRETTY ON ANYONE. AS FOR ME, AND MANY OTHER PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT VIEW CARRIE AS A BEAUTIFULL PERSON "FROM THE INSIDE", KNOW THAT THEIR WILL BE HATERS EVERYWHERE, USUALLY PEOPLE HATE ON ANYONE THAT SHINES, AND IT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY, HER FANS KNOW TO JUST LOOK PAST THE IGNORANCE.

Since the writer undoubtedly does not personally know Ms. Underwood it is impossible for her to evaluate whether she 'likes' her or not. She clearly disagrees with her support of the HSUS. She is entitled to her own set of opinions about that organization but not her own set of facts. The Humane Society is a reputable organization with a 4 (of 4) star rating from Charity Navigator (a reputable rating agency). Charity navigator lists their Program Expenses (Percent of the charity’s budget spent on the programs and services it delivers) at 78.6% of their budget. Fundraising expenses are listed at 17.9% ( not 41%). The HSUS mission statement starts with "The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization. Established in 1954, The HSUS seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals - a world that will also benefit people." Nowhere in their mission statement or literature do they oppose family farms.

Disliking someone for DONATING their OWN money to an organization of thier choice is about as ignorant as liking someone for stealing someone's money. You have the right to your opinions, as we all do, however we do not have the right to judge people for their own personal choices unless they are hurting someone, like you are for trashing someone who has brought you no harm in any way, and has donated to many good causes. their are people out there stealing, cheating, and killing. maybe that's where you should focus your negativity, Not judging...but it seems to me that your husbands attraction to her may bother you more than you think if you can dislike her for simply disagreeing where she donates her own money. That's pathetic. With all the people intentionally hurting our country today, maybe you should prioritize who you chose to bash. Just my opinion of course... however I'm entitled to it, as you are to yours.

Eric, I am glad that Carrie Underwood is a fan of animals. The problem with HSUS is that less than 1% of their monies go the local humane societies. The vast majority of their monies go towards efforts to eliminate agricultural livestock. I just wish she would give her money to local humane societies.

You are nuts and have no right to condemn Carrie Underwood in this way. Just read the comments posted and you'll see how Carrie donates millions to very worthy causes. She's a vegan you idiot and she loves animals. Maybe if YOU took the time to let her know what you think the Humane Society is like she might consider it before giving to them. Why don't you openly condemn other celebrities for their donations? YOU are clueless that's why. I regret even reading this blog because YOU are so unfair and rediculous for what you're saying to condemn her. YOU should be ashamed of bashing someone who gives so much to others. YOU should take her example of kindness and be a little kinder on this blog site!

I've read everyone's comments and I believe that everyone DOES have the right to their own opinion. I don't think that some of you realized what the writer was trying to say. She simply was standing up for her side. I, myself, farm too. Farmer's are CONSTANTLY trying to prove what they do is worthwhile and that we really are doing whats best for the animals. The writer wasn't trying to tell you all to hate Carrie or not respect what other organizations she supports. She was simply trying to say, Carrie if you don't support us, we don't support you. There are many other organizations Carrie could support--including ones for farmers. And btw. I know the writer personally. She is a wonderful mom, caretaker, farmer, wife, and advocate for agriculture. She DOES give her time to many non-profit organizations. Being an advocate for agriculture is hard. You have to truly be dedicated and love what you do. This writer does. She just simply doesn't agree with Carrie. As you see at the bottom, she crossed out DO NOT, and put CAN NOT because that would go against what she works hard for everyday. This article, in NO WAY, was meant to cause this much hate. Please just remember that farming is a hard job and we're all trying to battle critics everyday. When you sit down with your family for your holiday festivities, please remember that people, like this writer, are working hard, protecting, and spreading the image of good farming to make sure that you have food on your table. Enjoy your ham this holiday. Some farmer worked really hard to make sure he/she could feed that to you.

You have every right to be upset by the organizations Carrie Underwood supports. I would clearly be upset if any star was giving to an organization who was trying to end my family's livelihood. What really get's me is that Carrie is known as a country star. You know who the majority of country fans are? People who make their living through farming and ranching--the very same people affected by HSUS's animal rights agenda and their efforts to END animal agriculture as a whole. That's something to be upset about! “If we don’t stand together, we don’t stand a chance.”

What is going on with all the hate for Carrie Underwood? She is a talented young lady who can actually sing, and she donates a lot of her earnings to charity. So many people who want to spew their hate for a woman that they do not even know. The Internet created a monster.

Thank you Mark. Finally some sense in this crazy business. Might I add that the extra costs are there because the animal isn't doing as well. In other words, they're suffering MORE not less when they're forced outside.

Daisy, the dislike (not hate) for Carrie Underwood stems from her support of HSUS, despite her knowing that the organization operates under false pretense. Carrie knows that HSUS only gives 1% of collections to the support of local, boots on the ground, saving the puppies and kittens animal shelters. Carrie knows that HSUS is primarily engaged in litigation and legislation, using a phalanx of high paid lawyers and lobbyists. She also knows that litigation and legislation is focused on seperating humans and animals rather than actually protecting the well being of animals. Yes, Carrie is talented. And she probably works pretty hard for the money she earns. And she has the right to give that money to whomever she chooses. It is her choice of donation receipients that angers farmers. Although she is kind of fakie and not at all a country girl like Mirand Lambert, most people in agriculture liked Carrie Underwood until she started promoting veganism and the radical animal rights agenda. Carrie's donations and publicity aid HSUS in making things more difficult for farmers, hunters, equine enthusiasts and even pet owners. That is what is with all the animosity toward Carrie. She has the right to donate where and say what she likes. And we have the right to speak out against her.

While your personal opinions are expressed and freedom of speech is certainly a favorable amendment in our country's constitution, it does not extricate you from freedom of speech. As an attorney, one of several who are on the board of attorneys for the Humane Society of the United States, your untruthful words are slander. The Humane Society does not spend only .8% of its proceeds on animal shelters. Please review a credible source of the fiscal budget, and you will find out why Worth Magazine and other reputable publications have named HSUS one of the top ten fiscally responsible non-profit organizations. We will be taking legal action to this post because it is slander and a direct attack on a non-profit organization.

I'm not here to convince you to like Carrie. I'm here to ask, is it necessary to talk unkindly of someone? Aren't we called to love one another? This is the problem with the world. Always pointing out everyone's flaws, or what they think to be flaws. "Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye." (Matthew 7:3-5 ESV) Before calling people out on things you don't agree with, you should do research. Check out Carrie's CATS foundation. I believe that is something you would be supportive of. And no, you do not have to like Carrie. We can't all like everyone. I understand that. But I don't think it is necessary to post a blog about someone that could be hurtful to them. Wouldn't it hurt you if someone did that to you? Seriously, I am sure it would because I am sure you are someone with good intentions and tries to do good things, as does Carrie. Just some food for thought. Just want to encourage love and being kind to one another.

Cant stand how you people can sit there all smug while you torture and butcher intelligent animals who can feel and love their young just like you do! You murder thousands and expect people to be supportive of your disgusting trade. There are millions of jobs out there but you choose to murder helpless animals. you all make me sick I hope your farms burn down and the animals you force to breed and butcher are set free. you run concentration camps for the helpless. You're no better than common Nazis!!

A lot of hate and anger here. I did some checking and was surprised to find that HSUS does provide little for shelter, the 1% seems correct, and spends so much on executives salaries, marketing and advertising. I have yet to donate and doubt I ever will. If Carrie chooses to donate to HSUS, she can. Perhaps many donate because they believe it goes directly to providing more humane treatment of animals.

I think the photo of Ms Underwood proudly holding up a huge check from her to HSUS for $200,000 might have something to do with several negative remarks. $200,000 is approximately what Wayne Pacelle makes a year. His fleet of 100+ lawyers have excellent retirement packages. Its no secret that she is a vegan. It is no secret that Wayne Pacelle is a vegan. Its no secret that he intends to put an end to all animal agriculture (as well as hunting and fishing.) Its no secret that less than 1% of folks poor puppy and kitty monies actually goes to shelters. Its no secret that they spend a great deal of money on advertising. Put some of those facts together and its hard not to draw conclusions, correct or otherwise.

I am saddened by all the hateful and hurtful comments to this blog post. Nowhere in this post did the author express any hate towards Carrie Underwood - the author simply said she dislikes Carrie Underwood, can not like Carrie Underwood, and explains WHY. The author never says that other people should feel the same way as she does; she is simply expressing her opinion. I know the author personally, and she is a very genuine, caring, compassionate person. The author also never says that Carrie Underwood donates solely to HSUS; the author simply points out that Carrie Underwood does donate to HSUS. For all of you standing up for Carrie, I'm sure Ms. Underwood appreciates your support. I'm standing up for the author of this article, who has the right to express her opinion in her own blog post!
