College can be the best time of your life. It is confusing, exciting, fun, scary and adventurous, all at the same time. Still, starting out in college at a big university can be overwhelming. Even though you are given a curriculum of the classes required to receive your degree, there is no manual that comes with exactly what you should do.

Of course, the best way to overcome your initial fears, find friends and get connected is to participate in activities. Universities offer multiple ways to get involved: There are intramural sports, clubs, organizations, athletic events, etc. Being active gets you out there and breaks many students out of their shells. Clubs are an easy way to be involved and get to know other students. In addition, majors and colleges have groups or clubs related to specific fields in which students can become involved.

Being active and getting involved is very important and is a great way to network. Another great way to network is by talking to advisors and professors about how to make get more involved and by taking opportunities.

When it comes to looking for internships, make sure to attend your school’s the career fair. There are many people on campus that will help you perfect your resume and ensure that you get the internship you want.

I was scared and worried when I went to a university but I tried to do the things that would help me succeed. I planned out all the classes I would take each semester. I learned how to make my resume stand out. I joined multiple clubs and organizations. I even talked to my professors after class and asked questions. I had internships each summer during college with amazing companies. I wanted to be sure that if anyone had anything to say about me, it would be something positive.

It’s important to remember it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Academics and learning is important in college, but it is essential to get connected and network while you’re there.
