Talk about “bear” necessities of life! A new collection of designer jeans takes "distressed" to a whole new level, no “lion.”

Bad puns aside, a group of Japanese volunteers turned to a brilliant idea to help raise support for the Kamine Zoo in Hitachi City, Japan — Zoo Jeans.

According to National Public Radio, to make Zoo Jeans, volunteers with the Mineko Club first wrapped old tires and giant rubber balls in sheet of denim, placing them in enclosures before releasing the zoo's tigers, lions and bears.

"The animals roar, gnaw and claw at their toys, and when they're done we gather up what's left of the damaged denim. It is from this unique fabric that we make the jeans,” the group said on their website.

"Zoo Jeans are the only jeans on earth designed by dangerous animals," the group says.

Once the denim is thoroughly distressed, designers used the material to craft one-of-kind jeans. Check out the video above to learn more.

Science Alert reports the jeans went to auction online on July 7 with a starting price of $500. One pair of jeans made with tiger-chewed denim had 15 bids with a high bid of $1,200 as of July 12.

So what do those within the fashion industry think of these unique jeans?

Mithun Ramanandi, a men's denim buyer at Selfridges in the United Kingdom, told The Guardian he isn’t convinced the technique has desired effects.

"The rips are too sporadic," he says. "Men want them on the thigh, the knee, the back pocket. Rips on the calf, as they are here, don't look natural."
